Debt Management Tips
It's no fun being in debt. Money shortages and high balances on credit cards etc are always stressful, and serious debt can emotionally drain you. Negative feelings like fear and anxiety need to be dealt with before they start to overwhelm you.
So here are some self-help debt management tips to help you deal with being in debt.
Get a perspective - debt, it's not the end of the world!
- It's only money. Remember that!
- Now that's probably the last thing you want to hear right now, but it's true. If your only problem in life is lack of money then count yourself lucky.
- Losing your money isn't like losing a loved one, or being diagnosed with a terminal illness, money problems can be solved.
Responsibility - it's yours...
- Your own spending behavior is at least partly responsible for creating the debt problem.
- So stop blaming the credit card and loan companies - that only makes you feel like a victim and that in turn makes you feel like you are not responsible.
- You're responsible. Accept responsibility, say enough is enough and make your stand!
Stop spending right now!
- When you're digging yourself into a hole, the first thing to do is... stop digging. Obvious?
- Perhaps. But when someone realises they are deep in debt, it's almost a natural defense mechanism to go into denial.
- And one common method of denial is to continue spending and borrowing more money and pretend like there is no problem. Ask yourself - how long can you keep pretending?
- Next time you find yourself putting something on your credit card that you don't need, JUST STOP!
- And remember that you need exactly four things in this life: food, water, (basic) clothing, and shelter. Consider everything else a luxury in the short term.
Money doesn't equal who you are
- Sadly nowadays, money seems to buy status in some peoples eyes. It's easy to believe that your value as a person depends on the value of your bank balance.
- Rubbish! You are a unique individual and your character and personality are not a product of money. Are you a better or nicer person because you flash a gold or platinum credit card?
- Plus.. does it really matter what other people think of you?
- Quite often they are "acquaintances"... or anonymous strangers you pass in the street who may admire your latest designer gear... or shop assistants happy to sell you another expensive item of clothing you can't afford.
- Are these people really important to you? Of course not...What, they are??? Ask yourself why?
- Focus on the people close to you who really matter. True friends and family don't judge you by your wealth and neither should you.
Use opportunity
- Life's problems are nothing more than opportunities for learning and self-growth.
- Ask yourself what you are learning from being in debt. Learn from the mistakes you have made in the past and don't repeat them.
- Start today and look at it as an opportunity for a fresh start. Today is the first step on the road to becoming debt free.
- Are you willing to take that first step? No one is going to take it for you....
- When is now a good time to start?
